Many hiring managers will start an interview with an open-ended question “Tell me about yourself”. So, before reading further I would like you to stop here. Pen down an effective introduction. If it is your first time that you are facing this question then you can take few minutes to think and write something about yourself. Remember what you say during the first phase of the interview will make an enormous difference in the outcome – in an effective way or in a bad way.
Now coming back to article. This article deals with the art of introducing yourself. What’s the best way to introduce yourself at a job interview? How can you start off an interview making the best possible impression? We will find answers of such questions in this article. So, sit back and relax. We will crack the trickiest question of an interview “Tell me something about yourself”
What should your introduction include?
You’ll have an opportunity to introduce yourself on an in-depth basis during the interview. First impressions can play a significant role in how an employer perceives you as a candidate. In fact, some hiring managers may decide to reject a candidate based on what they didn’t do when they met them. That’s why it’s important to pay attention to interview manners and to carefully think through how you will introduce yourself during a job interview.
Most people will try to google this question and will end up finding thousands of tips heading in same direction. They will end up with introduction like “Good morning. My name is ABC. I am pursuing my BE in ECE from TU Patiala. My cgpa is __. My father’s name is ____ and my mother’s name is ____. My hobbies are ______.”
Now what’s wrong with this introduction? Or we can discuss what’s right with this introduction because this can end up discussion fast. Only good point was last line which was said in wrong way. Interviewer already know about your college, degree and he will hardly bother about cgpa since you have already met eligibility criteria. And regarding your family background, if interviewer is interested he will ask. So, it is irrelevant to speak these points.
The core of your response should focus on the key elements in your background which will enable you to excel in the job for which you are interviewing. Your answer should reflect who you are. Remember you need to speak something that will drive the interview in your direction. Your goal is to connect with the interviewer, as well as to show that you’re qualified for the job and would make a great new hire.
Remember following points
- If you are a technical person introduce yourself as a technology lover. How you are influenced by latest technologies and what makes you crazy about innovative technologies.
- If you are in a consultancy company interview introduce yourself as a person with strong interpersonal skills. Mention yourself as a team player, and talk about how your cocurricular activities helped you to develop a personality suitable for job.
- Coders’ introduction should speak about how learning various technologies helped them to make projects that solved some problems. They should speak about how good and passionate they are in learning and project work that makes them suitable for job.
Remember, your resume should also talk about all the skills you will mention in your introduction. This will drive interviewer’s attention to your resume (build awesome resume: http://unsaidtalks.com/art-resume-writing/) and he will have no option except to discuss points in your introduction and in your resume. Be prepared to provide specific examples of how and where you have utilized your assets to successfully carry out work or volunteer roles, academic projects, or other productive endeavors.
How long should be your introduction?
Your introduction should be concise enough to hold the interest of the interviewer and long enough to cover all points about you.
Generally, a quick recap of your most compelling qualifications will suffice. You could also mention a couple of tidbits which are not essential to the job, but reflect your persona like the fact that you are an avid skier, have performed at comedy clubs, or collect African art. Of course, your initial comments should show your enthusiasm for the job and organization.
These are all points you need to make an impactful introduction. Remember one last thing. Know yourself better before preparing an introduction. You should know all your strengths that will ultimately make up a great, impactful introduction.
